Is professional liability insurance coverage mandatory in Canada?
The answer is no. Unlike car insurance coverage, you are not required by law to be covered under a professional liability insurance policy. But here’s the thing: Just because you don’t have to be covered under this policy doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. Also keep in mind that several companies will require that you be covered under this policy before you are allowed to work with them.
This isn’t mean to penalize you. It’s meant to protect you.
As a professional, you are vulnerable to being sued. By now this shouldn’t be a surprise to you. We live in a very litigious world in which claims are made against professionals almost daily. They are so common, in fact, that chances are that you probably know (or know of ) someone who has been through this.
Our question to you is this one:
How do you know it won’t happen to you?
You simply can’t. It doesn’t matter if you are the best at what you do. All it takes is one thing to go wrong (or a disgruntled client) for you to have to defend yourself in court.
But you don’t have to do it alone.
Enter professional liability insurance coverage. Unlike general liability insurance coverage, this type of coverage covers you against claims made against you… regardless of whether you were at fault or not.
